Dow Corning Silicone insulation applications for LED lightingLEDs, like all electrical devices, require dielectric materials to insulate leads, wires and other components against crosstalk. Yet as LED designs and applications expand in number and diversity, the sensitive electronic elements inside require insulation against other environmental factors as well. Thermal cycling during and after fabrication can put damaging stress on LED components, while demanding outdoor and automotive applications are exposing LEDs to higher heat and impact.

The bottom line is protection. Well-insulated components are more likely to perform reliably over the expected 50,000 hours of an LED’s useful lifetime.

Silicone coatings and encapsulant materials from Dow Corning can help protect LED components against an array of environmental factors. For over seven decades, our materials have delivered proven electrical insulation for boards, modules and delicate components.

In addition to dielectric insulation, low modulus Dow Corning® encapsulants provide excellent protection against mechanical shock and vibration. For LED applications subject to thermal cycling, we offer a range of silicone gels that provide a flexible, almost fluid dielectric coating that completely insulates and protects delicate parts – such as solder joints and wire bonds – from the effects of thermal expansion. This explains why our products are often the materials of choice for LEDs rated to perform reliably at temperatures from -45°C to 200°C and above.
